Great Lakes is expecting record crops in two of the four territories in which it owns ginneries. In Zimbabwe, good prices paid to farmers last year encouraged extensive planting, and excellent rains are boosting yields. Crop projections are for around 350,000 mt seed cotton this season, up from 198,000 mt last season. In Zambia, good rains have benefited the crop and total seed cotton production is expected to exceed 200,000 mt. In Uganda the season was disappointing, some 60% down from last year. Farmers received good prices and are expected to boost planting this season. Great Lakes is well positioned to take advantage of expected crop increases, with six ginneries situated in the major cotton growing areas. In Malawi, Great Lakes has intensified its cotton crop support program and good rains are expected to make up for reduced plantings
